I've never been to France - other than the airport during a layover - but I did see the key of the Bastille, hanging on the wall at Mt. Vernon. Also at Mt. Vernon is a fine marble mantelpiece, sent over the ocean by some European dignitary. Legend has it that the ship on which this mantelpiece came was attacked by pirates, who, when they heard that it was destined as a gift for George Washington, left it alone of all the spoil, so great was their respect for him.
Some top French Revolutionary books to read:
Scaramouche
A Tale of Two Cities
Les Miserables (of course the revolution depicted in the story is not the Revolution, but there are ample flashbacks)
The Scarlet Pimpernel
