It's a lo-o-o-ng day in the world...

The afternoon is slowly crawling by, as if it just emerged from the primeval sludge and hasn't fully developed its legs yet. Molasses and tar pits! Why can't it be 5:00 already?

At least the radio is playing Christmas music. At last.

I really like secular Christmas music. I love the Christian Christmas carols, of course, but there's something catching about the classic Christmas tunes. Two years ago we watched the movie White Christmas, starring Bing Crosby and Danny Kaye. It was a great movie, although the song I remember the most wasn't the classic White Christmas but Love, You Didn't Do Right By Me.

Love, you didn't do right by me.
As they say in the song,
You done me wrong.

Somehow it suited my cynical streak, delivering just the perfect dose of Bah humbug.

Which reminds me, we have to go log a Christmas tree this weekend and it's going to cost us at least five times as much as trees cost in Oregon. Can you believe that when we lived next to a tree farm, we could cut our own tree for $1/ft? It's almost enough to drive one to artificial trees with fake fresh pine scent. And we also need to string white Christmas lights on our house. Why didn't we string lights up last year and just leave them on? Blah humbug.

Sigh. . . I love Christmas music. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas is my all-time fave.

Whatever you do . . . if you possibly can, get a REAL tree - they're so much fun and the SMELL so wonderful. The mess is totally worth it. The BEST thing to do is to cut one down yourself. If we ever get TIME this year, that's what we're hoping to do. :)

Yeah, yeah, but here's a plug for artificial trees: you can pick them up and move them with one hand, and you don't have needles sticking to your socks the next July. Then again, you have a relatively maintenance-free Christmas this year, so the switch to artificial isn't as looming a prospect. :)

I love Christmas songs, Silver Bells being my favorite. I hated the movie "White Christmas," being under the mistaken impression that it was supposed to be telling a story rather than showcasing four talents. Of course, I have a longstanding antipathy toward Bing Crosby anyway -- a real Roberts grudge -- which my family enjoys exploiting occasionally. -- SJ

I know artificial trees are easier and less of a fire hazard and even cheaper (the ultimate incentive with me) but I don't care! When you grow up where every second neighbor has a Christmas tree farm, the thought of an artificial tree is almost worse than no tree at all. Maybe it is worse.

We just got a Bing Crosby Christmas CD with "White Christmas," "Silver Bells," etc., and oddly enough, "Faith of Our Fathers." The only one that would be better would be a Perry Cuomo one with "Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas."

"Feliz Navidad" is my favorite. Pat Ramirez introduced me to it; I don't remember hearing it before a few years ago. Last year, I got to sing it with a men's barbershop community singing group, which was a blast.

I grew up with an artificial tree in my early years, and then we switched to real in high school. I still like artifical better, even though the real ones smell so good. Artificial ones are simply easier to deal with. --DJ

Rose, Corvallis must be a different world from Portland. We paid $50 for our Christmas tree this year and I moaned all the way home about how we used to get one in Virginia for $25!

Isn't it funny how where you're from (Virginia for me; Oregon for you) sort of colors your expectations for the rest of your life? :)

This is random, but I am struck at the moment by the oddity of this coincidence: when I met your sister Leah nearly TEN years ago at EXCEL (I can't beleive it's been that long) I never would have believed that your family would end up in Virginia and I'd end up in Oregon. ;) Who'd have thought. Say hello to her for me when you get the chance.
